Funding Agencies

Swiss National Grid  /  The right tool for the job  /  Funding Agencies

SwiNG’s main activities are funded by membership fees. The working group projects it is coordinating, supporting, and representing internationally are funded by programs like AAA/SWITCH and the upcoming initiative from the CRUS program, Scientific information: access, processing and storage (Information scientifique: accès, traitement et sauvgarde/ Wissenschaftliche Information: Zugang, Verarbeitung und Speicherung).

SwiNG is committed to representing the interests of its members and of the Swiss scientific community, by participating in the development of a national computational service and in helping to secure funding.

Sample of SwiNG's track record

Swiss Academic Computing Cloud (SwissACC, CRUS bridge project), May - Dec 2013, a Swiss-wide “computational science” platform offering a range of resources and services. It also provides high-quality know-how for user and application support and sustains the grid/cloud activities of the «AAA/SWITCH-e-Infrastructure for e-Science» program. It brings together 14 partners and over 20 applications with user communities from the life sciences, economics, earth sciences,  cryptography and physics.

  • NGI-CH, international representation of Swiss communities, for example in the European initiative, EGI InSPIRE, a SwiNG partner.

  • SwiNG expertise builds on earlier initiatives like Swiss Multi Science Computing Grid (SMSCG), May 2008 - April 2013, with 11 partners,  approx. 20 applications, leveraging grid technologies for the life sciences, physics, earth sciences, cryptography, and economics.

SMSCG usage statistics for 2012: 7 Mio hours  CPU time, 1.9 Mio Jobs
